It's a set of symptoms artificially defined as an aid in medical treatment. Same as many other psychological diagnoses, like BPD or depression.  That being said I'm starting to see a lot of autistic tendencies around me. I'm pretty sure we're seeing an increase here. On the best experiences, it's nostalgic, immersive, and memorable. Personally, I think there's something psychological to it.
